From the Principal

Nazareth School San Diego, California, USA

September 15, 2017

Dear Parents:

Our school year is off to a busy start; academic lessons, sports, clubs and PTG events are becoming a part of our daily Nazareth School life. We are quickly approaching the mid-point of the 1st Quarter. A few things to note:
• Please make sure that you are able to access Gradelink to review your child’s academic progress. If you have questions regarding grades or assignments, please contact your child’s teacher.
• Unfortunately, as our September days are passing, our Lost-and-Found is starting to collect items. Please make sure that all of your children’s items are labeled with their names.
• Teachers are noting that not all students are in compliance with the school uniform. If school uniform dress is on back-order with Dennis Uniform, please let your child’s teacher know. Otherwise, the expectation is that all members of our community respect the rules of the community by observing the school policies. Thank you for your support and cooperation.

The testing window for the STAR assessment opened this week. Students will be participating in math and reading tests during the next weeks. In this week’s envelope, you will find a letter from Matthew Cordes, Associate Director of Schools for the Diocese of San Diego. Mr. Cordes discusses the nature of the STAR assessment and how the data it produces is used in diocesan schools. Our teachers use the data to better understand each child’s academic achievement and growth and to make changes in their instructional methods to enhance each child’s educational experience. Formal STAR assessments are taken three times in the course of the year to measure academic growth. Your child’s scores will be sent home later in this 1st Quarter.

Congratulations to Grace Balkowski, 4th grade, who created the winning design for our Turkey Trot T-Shirts. Grace said that her design, which references the Core Values of the Sisters of Nazareth, was inspired by how important our Core Values are to our school and to all of us who will be Turkey Trotters on November 18th! The order form for T-Shirts may be found in today’s family envelope; please return it as soon as possible.

The Nazareth School Eagles are beginning their athletic seasons. Boys’ JV Flag Football and Girls’ Softball held their first practices this week. Thank you to our head coaches, Mr. Michael Knapton (Football) and Ms. Taylor Curran (Softball), and all of the volunteers who are supporting our athletes. We will be distributing information regarding the schedule for games as soon as we receive them. Our Robotics Team, coached by Mr. Patrick Browder, is also planning its strategies for this year’s competitions. Go Eagles!

Today, our school liturgy was dedicated to “Remembering 9/11.” As we remember the victims and families affected by that horrific attack sixteen years ago, let us also remember in prayer all people whose lives are torn apart by violence – caused by man or nature. May they find peace in their lives and hearts.

Blessings to you and your families,

Dr. Colleen Mauricio, Principal
